Excerpt of an Interview with Author, L. Nolan-Ruiz:
Question: What would you say your novel is mainly about?
Answer: It is about how our environment plays into our DNA: nature versus nurture. Not that our genes don't contribute to our choices, behaviors, and overall character, but that we react to our environment, by the varied chromosomal strength and weakness in our DNA with which we are born. This is the overall, major theme. It's all about understanding who we really are, whether we like ourselves or not is not the issue; it's learning to deal with the hand we've been dealt.
Question: Would your protagonist, Selena Pasteur, be considered a heroine, or is she a tragic character?
Answer: What is unique about Selena is that she is infused with heroic, and simultaneously, tragic characteristics. You'll have to read the book to determine for yourself whether or not you believe her to be heroic, or tragic, in the end.
Question: This sounds fascinating. How long did it take you to write this novel?
Answer: It took me over 20 years with it's themes and meaning and purpose ruminating in my mind and heart. It took me two years to write it out.
